Carlton Mid Tri-Series Cricket: Australia Deserving Champions!

Glenn Maxwell

Australia showed today the difference between a top professional side and a disillusioned listless disgruntled side. Australia were in a similar situation put into bat first in the final of the Carlton Mid Triangular Cricket tournament played in Australia today like India were in the virtual semifinal against England on 30th January. While India starting well engineered the first batting collapse to be reduced 136/5 Australia starting shakily were reduced to 60/4 in the 18th over. While India managing another batting collapse with the tail not wagging enough could give just 200 runs as the target Australia not only recovered from that crisis but succeeded in setting an imposing target of 279 runs for England thanks to their middle order batsmen and the great tail. That target proved to be a match winning one as Australian bowlers responded with spirit and England just crumbled. It is also to be observed that all matches prior to the final had been won by the side chasing, but for top team these things hardly matter as they can win under any eventuality. Toss, pitch conditions and weather are things that bother only teams with no body language and a lot of negativity—at the moment India fit the bill. Australia have done the real positive preparation for the ICC World Cup 2015 to be played in their backyard and neighboring New Zealand.

Australia defeated England by 112 runs to lift the Carlton Mid Tri-Series Cricket Trophy in Perth today. Great inning of 95 off 116 balls by Glenn Maxwell and 60 off 99 balls by Mitchell Marsh leveraged Australia to a commanding position. For the wagging tail pacer Faulkner put the seal of authority by plundering 50 runs off 34 balls with 4 sixes and 4 fours and in 50 overs Australia made 278 for 7 wickets. For England Anderson who struck two lethal blows early on could not come back on his later spells and Finn went wicket-less while Woakes was the most expensive. Broad making a comeback captured 3 wickets, but could not contain the hosts.

England never looked to be in real pursuit even though the target was not unassailable. They kept on losing wickets at regular intervals and at 98/8 it was almost all over. Some tail resistance prolonged the inevitable with England finally bowled out for 166. Now with the ball off spinner Glenn Maxwell was the main damager with 4 wickets for 46 runs and was rightfully adjudged the man of the match. Mitchell Johnson who came back into the team in this match  did the damages early on capturing 3 wickets and Hazelwood joined in with 2 wickets.

Mitali: The Trauma of Losing a Sibling

Maybe I lied to her when I used to reassure her that she was going to be alright and was going to resume her life in some measure of normalcy in the future years; maybe all my gestures/expressions were false when I used to run my fingers across her forehead or embrace her on occasions when she was able to move around a bit; and maybe all my exhibitions of love care and responsibility were exposed as superficial when I failed to turn up in Delhi where she along with my mother were treated during September-October, 2022 (my mother Urmila Chakravarty was also diagnosed with dental cancer the same month the same year as she was) and when all the members of my parental family and the in-laws converged. Since that fateful day in August, 2022 when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer to that disastrous day of March 6, 2025—the day my younger blood sister Mitali (Mainu) Chakravarty Sarma (November 2, 1963—March 6, 2025) passed away in the wee hours in a hospital in Guwahati after giving a bra...

Kolkata: Cancel the Commerce of the Durga Puja Carnival!

Yes! We ask why shouldn't the pure Commerce show of the Durga Puja Carnival in Kolkata be canceled in view of the worsening medical crisis? For how long this cruel irony of continuing the worship of the Mother Goddess and continuing to torture/kill the Mothers in human forms going to continue?  Greed, limitless greed of humans! Dear God! This time Goddess Durga came in a cradle which in itself implies ominous times, and further, the tithis from Mahasaptami onward came mixed in such a way that you get three days of worship, technically. Yet, the greedy and selfie-social-media-crazy crowds of 'devotees' were still not satiated, descending on the Puja pandals in uncontrollable hordes for as long as seven days, and to pander to their greed and to have the maximum of business, most of the Puja organizers disregarded the tithi break-up completely and have been celebrating Bijoya Dashami or the Dussehra well into Ekadashi, the eleventh day! They expect the hordes to descend tonigh...
